Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen: What's the Difference?

The difference is the type of UV filter. Mineral sunscreens protect using zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide; chemical sunscreens use organic (carbon-based) filters such as avobenzone, octinoxate, or newer ones like Tinosorb. Both sit in a thin film on your skin and absorb UV — the real split is *inorganic vs. organic filters*, not "natural vs. synthetic."
First, about the names. "Chemical vs. mineral" is everyday language, but it's scientifically loose — zinc oxide is a chemical too, and every filter is manufactured. The accurate distinction is inorganic (mineral) vs. organic (chemical) filters: whether the UV-absorbing molecule is carbon-based.
How each one works. The old teaching was that mineral filters "reflect" UV like tiny mirrors while chemical filters "absorb" it. That's mostly wrong. When researchers actually measured it, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflected only about 4–5% of UV and absorbed the rest.[1] So both families mainly *absorb* UV and release it as a little heat — they just use different molecules.
How to tell which you have. Read the "active ingredients" panel, not the marketing:
- Mineral only → the only actives are Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide.
- Chemical → names like avobenzone, homosalate, octocrylene, octinoxate, or Tinosorb S/M.
- Both → that's a hybrid. Paste the ingredient list into the checker and it sorts this out for you.
Which is "better"? Neither is universally better — the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually reapply.
- Mineral filters are often chosen for reactive or sensitive skin and are a common first choice for young children.[2]
- Modern chemical and hybrid formulas tend to feel lighter and leave less white cast, so many people wear them more consistently.
- Broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB) is achievable with either — that label matters more than the filter type.
