Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin & Eczema: What to Look For

By Dr. Erah Anwar, PhD — skin scientist · Last updated 12 July 2026

If your skin is sensitive or eczema-prone, the safest starting point is a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen — zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the only UV filters, with no added fragrance. Fragrance is the most common allergen in skincare, and mineral filters are the least likely to sting or trigger a reaction.[1]

Why fragrance first. Added fragrance (listed as *parfum*, *aroma*, or a named essential oil) is a leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics — and it does nothing for sun protection.[1] For reactive skin it's the first thing worth cutting. Our checker flags fragrance and the 26 EU-declarable fragrance allergens in any product you paste in.

Why mineral filters are gentler. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit calmly on the skin and are far less likely to sting — including around the eyes — than some organic filters, which is why they're the usual recommendation for sensitive and paediatric skin.[1] They're also a sensible choice for skin that's currently flaring or barrier-compromised.

What to look for:

  • Fragrance-free (not just "unscented," which can still contain masking fragrance)
  • Mineral filters (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) if chemical filters have stung before
  • A short, simple ingredient list
  • Ideally patch-test a new product on your inner arm for a few days first

A caution on the word "hypoallergenic." It isn't a regulated term — it's the actual ingredient list that tells you what's in a product, which is exactly what the checker reads.

Browse sunscreens the community has screened for eczema & sensitive skin or fragrance-free mineral formulas. And if you're managing eczema more broadly, our sister tool eczemachecker.com checks any skincare ingredient list the same way.
